NEUROMUSCULAR THERAPY

WHAT IS NEUROMUSCULAR THERAPY?

NMT is based on neurological laws that explain how the central nervous system initiates and maintains pain. My goal is to relieve the pain and dysfunction by alleviating the underlying cause.

NMT emphasises the role of the brain, spine, nerves, trigger points and fascia in muscular pain. It uses advanced concepts to break the stress-tension-pain cycle. It aims to reduce muscle tonation and release compressed nerves so that circulation can increase and the body will return to normal neuromuscular integrity and balance.

Before starting the massage, I will locate the origin of the pain by addressing five key aspects of the body.

These include:

  • The presence of ischemia, which is a lack of blood supply to soft tissues, causing them to tighten.

  • Locating trigger points (sensitive points in your muscles that have become highly irritated).

  • Identifying nerve compression/entrapment (nerve pressure caused by soft tissue and muscles).

  • Evaluating postural distortion (assessing your overall posture and looking for imbalances).

  • Recognising biomechanical dysfunction (poor movements from daily joint activities like golf or abnormal gait).

Once these factors have been examined, I will have a specific understanding of the source of your pain and can develop a personalised massage plan to help relieve discomfort.

FAQS

DO I NEED A DOCTOR’S REFERRAL?

No you don't need a doctor's referral for Neuromuscular or Physical Therapy. Book an appointment direct with me.

WHAT TYPES OF HEALTH INSURANCE DO YOU ACCEPT?

Laya Healthcare and Irish Life
I am a member of the Association of Neuromuscular Physical Therapists (ANMPT).
If you are a member of Laya Healthcare or Irish Life; part of your treatment will be covered under your policy.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NMT AND PHYSIOTHERAPY?

Physiotherapy is a broad based health care profession that has a special focus on acute musculoskeletal care of the physically active and deals with a number of diverse medical fields.

Neuromuscular Therapy offers a special focus on chronic pain and injury including musculoskeletal injuries related to physical activity but, unlike Physiotherapy, Neuromuscular Therapy has a focus on the pathophysiology, aetiology and treatment of Myofascial Trigger Points. Such specialisation allows students of Neuromuscular Therapy to examine these areas in much greater detail than a student of physiotherapy.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE?

Every client is treated on an individual basis. A thorough examination is done of the the injury or area in question. While the massage or TPT is being carried out, I will give a detailed analysis of what is going on.
